Are you eager to create videos but unsure where to begin? Let's walk through the first video you should create as a new content creator. This is the video that helped me kickstart my own content creation journey. If you're struggling to make your first YouTube video, stick with me, and by the end of this post, you'll know exactly what video to start with and how to create it.

Why Start with a Channel Trailer?

The best first video to make for your YouTube channel is a channel trailer. Channel trailers have a formula you don't have to follow, but also why not when you're trying to make your first video? Channel trailers have four main components for you to focus on: who you're talking to, what you're talking about, why you're talking to them, and what content you'll be bringing to the table.

If you're unsure about any of these points, I highly encourage you to check out this video.

Understanding What a YouTube Channel Trailer Is

A channel trailer plays when a non-subscriber views your. YouTube channel for the first time. It needs to quickly inform them about what they can expect from your channel.

Given our increasingly short attention spans, you must captivate viewers quickly before they scroll away.

Four Essential Components of a Channel Trailer

1. The Hook

Captivate your viewer's attention within the first 3 to 7 seconds. Use a question or a shocking statement to grab their interest.

For example, "Do you struggle to create content consistently?" This engagement tool helps hook your audience and encourages them to keep watching.

Experiment with different hooks and see what resonates best with your audience.

2. Introduce Yourself

Share your name and relevant details about yourself that connect you with your content and viewers. If you're creating content related to your profession, mention your job title. If it's a passion project, share how long you've been involved.

For example, "Hi, I'm Claire Miller, a content producer making this my full-time job because I love creating content and helping others do the same."

3. What Viewers Will Gain

Highlight the type of content you plan to create. Why should they subscribe? What can they expect—tutorials, vlogs, reviews, humor? Be clear about the value you're providing.

For instance, "On this channel, I provide practical tips and tricks to help you achieve your content creation dreams."

4. Personal Connection

Share something personal to connect with your viewers. It could be how you got started, a challenge you overcame, or your motivation for starting the channel.

For example, "I graduated from film school 10 years ago and learned the importance of teamwork, but in today's social media-driven world, we're often doing it all ourselves, which can be intimidating."

BONUS TIP: Sharing Your Posting Schedule

Although not mandatory, sharing your posting schedule in your channel trailer can help you stay consistent and set clear expectations for your viewers.

For example, "I post new videos every Wednesday, so subscribe and hit the notification bell to stay updated.”

Filming Tips

- Keep It Simple: Choose one location with good lighting, such as in front of a window, to ensure a bright and clear video.

- Look at the Camera: Especially if using a front-facing camera, avoid looking at yourself. Maintain eye contact with the camera lens to connect better with your viewers.

- Bring Energy: Ensure your tone and energy reflect what you want to convey in your videos. If you sound tired or unenthusiastic, consider re-filming.

- Remind Viewers to Engage: Don’t forget to tell viewers to like, share, and subscribe. It’s a small but crucial step that encourages audience interaction.

Remember, the most important thing is to be yourself. Authenticity resonates with your audience more than perfection. If you found this guide helpful, please like, share, and subscribe. If you have any questions or need more guidance, let me know in the comments—I’m here to help.
